Collecting Art: 101

Building an art collection is a satisfying lifelong pursuit.  It can also be an investment.  Beginning well will save frustration and money in the long run.

Collecting simply to set off your interior decorating is one thing.  To build a serious art collection is another, and one of the most important elements is focus.  Whether the intention is to collect from a particular genre, region, or era, as much should be learned as possible.  This will be valuable when making purchases, but more importantly, this focus will assist in finding the pieces that satisfy the collector.

Budget considerations have to be made as well.  Oil paintings are generally far more expensive than sketches or watercolor studies by the same artist.  If the focus is a time period, begin with works in less expensive media, for example.  And quality, rather than quantity, is always the goal.  A shabby collection of 40 pieces isn’t as strong as a well-chosen collection of five pieces.

When considering the worth of a collection, the saying “the sum is more than the parts” is often true.  A collection itself, by choosing pieces that complement one another or make a statement when viewed together, can have its own value creatively and financially.
